Many people were rejoicing that Lori Lightfoot will be the first Black and openly LGBT mayor of Chicago. But she is getting some serious side-eyes, especially when less than 24 hours after being elected she wants to focus on the charges that were dropped against Jussie Smollett.

Lightfoot told MSNBC, “The State’s Attorney’s office here which made the decision unilaterally to drop the charges has to give a much more fulsome explanation. We cannot create the perception that if you’re rich or famous or both that you got one set of justice — and for everybody else it’s something much harsher. That won’t do and we need to make sure that we have a criminal justice system that has integrity.”
Oh, really? What about if you are a cop. Why doesn’t Lori Lightfoot decided to investigate the cops who allegedly covered up Laquan McDonald being murdered? As Kim Foxx, the Cook County State Attorney, said, even if he was guilty, which has not been proven, it’s a class 4 felony, the least serious category, which covers things like falsely pulling a fire alarm in school.
Lightfoot continued, “I believe that everybody is entitled to a presumption of innocence. But I saw — as I’m sure you and your listeners saw — a very compelling case, with video tapes, witness statement and other information that looked like he had staged a hoax, and if that happened he’s got to be held accountable.”

In case you missed it, all charges were dropped against Smollett, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel jumped on television and whined, “This is a whitewash of justice. A grand jury could not have been clearer.”
He also accused Smollett of doing this “all in the name of self-promotion.” He asked, “Where is the accountability in the system?”
Maybe he should ask that question again and think of the family of Laquan McDonald.

The Chicago Police Department has dropped the ball from the beginning with their handling of the case. Originally, a police spokesperson said there was no footage of the assailants. Then, hours later, there were two “persons of interest” on video. They also claimed the “Empire” actor “refused” to give the cops his phone, but he did give his phone records. Then the FBI reportedly said the Chicago police “overstated” their Smollett case.
On Jan. 29, while walking to a subway, Smollett claimed two men yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him, investigators told The Hollywood Reporter. They allegedly punched and poured bleach on him while one of the suspects put a rope around his neck. As they fled the scene, Smollett told police they said, “This is MAGA country.”
Smollett has always maintained his innocence.
