In the wake of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti, today televangelist Pat Robertson raised the bar for vile, insensitive, and nonsensical comments. The prominent right-wing religious leader and founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, discussing the crisis, said that Haitians are “cursed” because they “swore a pact to the devil” in order to gain their freedom from the French, and hundreds of thousands of people have been injured or killed in this natural disaster as punishment.
So let me see if I have this straight: According to Robertson, the DEVIL is responsible for slaves gaining their freedom in 1804, meanwhile GOD is responsible for some of the worst devastation this nation has ever experienced … Got it.
Not only does this guy seem appallingly unsympathetic to other people’s suffering, but he seems to have one of the basic tenets of his own professed faith – the whole “good” vs. “evil” thing – a bit turned around. Some Christian. They really will let anyone say anything on TV these days, won’t they?
