People Lil Wayne

NEW YORK — Lil Wayne was sentenced Monday to a year in jail in New York City for having a loaded gun on his tour bus in 2007, then was taken away in handcuffs to begin his term immediately.

The Grammy Award-winning rapper, born Dwayne Carter, was sentenced in Manhattan after pleading guilty in October to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He admitted having the loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun on his tour bus.

The rapper will serve his sentence in city jails, not a state prison. He could be released in about eight months with good behavior.

Before Monday’s court appearance, it had proved difficult to actually begin Lil Wayne’s agreed-upon sentence.

First, the rap star’s sentencing was postponed in February so he could undergo surgery on his bejeweled teeth. Then, a fire shut down Manhattan’s main criminal courthouse while he was on his way there last week.

Lil Wayne has been one of music’s most prolific and profitable figures in recent years. His “Tha Carter III” was the best-selling album of 2008. His latest album, “Rebirth,” was released last month.

Facing jail with his career in full throttle, Lil Wayne has prepared with a burst of work and farewell shows and videos for fans. He said in a video clip sent last week to MTV News that he shot footage for seven music videos with various artists in one night over the weekend.

He told Rolling Stone for a story last month that he planned to keep working while behind bars.

“I’ll be still rapping in there, have a gang of raps ready when I come back home,” he said.

With good behavior, he could be released in about eight months.

City jail officials haven’t said where the multiplatinum-selling artist will be housed among their roughly 13,000 inmates. His lawyer has said she plans to ask for protective custody out of concern for his safety and health following his extended oral surgeries.

Wow everyone does hate when u make it to the top!!! I mean if you don’t like him and/or don’t respect him, then don’t listen! So he’s not perfect. If he was ur son or brother would you hate on him like that just because you disagree with his choice of words or behavior? We are all human and we all f*k up. Even he said that. So why can’t we just stop all the hating and find something better to do? And maybe all of his music isn’t a 10, but you can’t deny that it takes talent to do what he does. I mean all that sh*t comes right from his head and he just keeps it comin. And he’s still young. Give him time to grow up a little. Love you Weezy!

the fact that ur screenname is miss weezy i dont think u could be use as an impartial character witness. its not hating people if u dont like something its call being grown with an opinion of ur own

    @ miss_weezy

he’s almost 28 f**king years old! give him time to grow up a little? youre funny. the man said he looked forward to going to jail and threw a going away to jail party? what kind of s**t is that?

wayne intentionally caught a case to gain street cred so more thug image loving groupies like yourself would go out and by more of his records. why would he need to carry a gun in nyc? it’s automatic jail time. he’s rich. he had all the security in the world. why a gun?

it’s a trend now days for fake thug rappers to go out and intentionally get in trouble so its gets them publicity. dont worry your pretty lil ass off. wayne is going into protective custody so all the real thugs wont beat his ass. he’ll do 6-8 months and before you know it, give vibe magazine a bulls**t interview about how he had to fight off other inmates and shyt. should make your cooter get hot and wet and run to go buy his next album.

    @whoever
Weezy did not do this as a publicity stunt. Although I hate to admit it, he is the biggest act in…ok I can’t even finish that statement, but you know what I mean.

Love him or hate him, he is the face of ***/*** just like Jay Z was. He ALREADY had the world in his palm, he ALREADY had all the fans/money/power he ever wanted. Going to jail is just him losing out on untold millions in touring/appearances/collaborations. This was not a stunt.

This is just the stupidity of a part of hip/hop culture..I’m just glad that not all of us artists are so dumb. I just wish hip hop fans wouldn’t use these idiots as role models…it ain’t helping our communities at all.
