This is not a situation where “letting bygones be bygones” means subjecting those children to returning to the scene of such unbridled negativity. The proper way to move forward is to teach those children that racism is still alive, and how to put this incident behind them without becoming bitter or resentful because the ingorant people of the world. On the advice of counsel, they invited the children to return. On the advice of counsel, the parent/children/daycare director declined the invite. That is my guess as to what happened. I respect the decision of these very wise parents to not accept their offer of “too little, too late”.

I think the parents did the right thing by not accepting the invitation. I think this club just feels guilty that the whole nation has found out about their racist views and are trying to make it right for their own sakes, not for the sakes of those children. The damage has been done and there is nothing that can reverse that. Even if the parents had accepted the invite, those club members would have still held a grudge. The tension in the air would have been so thick toward those innocent kids, you would be able to cut it with a knife. The parents and the day care need to press on with the lawsuit and show these racists that we as a people are not having this anymore. i think the swim club should sue the facility and set an example that they do not have to stand for that kind of treatment. They paid their money like everyone else so the facility can not say it was a financial reason for their behavior. this was blatant racial discrimination and to top it off the facility immediately returned the funds paid for the memberships as to say and we don’t want your money. this is 2009 Philly, don’t the folks there know that they are the minority. 90% of the residents aren’t from America.

They did the right thing by not accepting the invitation back. The swim club only asked them back because they’ve been outed. That type of treatment is not acceptable and if they had accepted the invitation then the facility would feel like it could continue the ill treatment in a different way. The only way to kill a snake is to cut off it’s head and the only way to stop business from discriminating against us all is to stop doing business with them. There’s more of us than them… Let’s make a difference.

I agree with the parents. But the underlying issue is how bigotry is taught to youths. It adds to the complexity of living in this country. One could easily say, we should just have our own and support our own but if we do that, are we just as bad as them?

My heart goes out to the parents of those children, and I understand their plight. Unfortunately, I believe that we’ve found ourselves in the next stage of the civil rights movement. As a race, Blacks have found themselves victimized not only by persistent and quite often, subversive racial discrimination, but also by the complacency that orginates from the belief that “racism is dead.” We fool hardily find fruitless satisfaction in witnessing a handful of our elite earn good livings or partake in previously racially prohibited activities. We participate in workers’ unions, listen to elitist Blacks, such as Bill Cosby ignorantly berate us as a nation of criminals instead of the disenfranchised and oppressed, and continue to fall prey to other notions of having made it. We’ve largely fooled ourselves into thinking that the days of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Jim Crow are over. Well, my extended family, racism has never died. It only found a new way to survive, just as other pervasive diseases do. This reality my be hard to perceive in densely urbanized areas outside of the southern region of the United States, where diversity in the workplace is seen as strategic, marketable, and profitable. However, the racial tension is so widely acknowledged in the south, that many there have grown to ignore it to a certain degree, having somewhat adopted a coping mechanism to forge ahead within a society with a highly unsympathetic justice system. However, it is our duty to ourselves, our children, and to all children to do whatever we can to identify racist practices and face them down, depite natural fears and misgivings. For this reason, I would propose that the parents accept the invitations to return, in addition with thousands of new Black/African American applicants. Racism is not a war(please let us never forget that it is a war) we can win by shying away when we see it. We have to fight for equality in whatever ways we can, through whatever mediums we can reach. It’s a hard and emotionally taxing undertaking–one in which we must break away from our norms and both fight our own battles, as well as support each other as we witness others struggling. Sure, many of us live pay check to pay check, so picking up picket signs and marching somewhere may not be feasible for all of us. However, if we were to support a few of us, empowering them to be our voice, we could accomplish great things. And please make no mistake, the greatest enemy to our cause is not our enemy, but his/her ignorance of our humanity. We are called racially/ethnically/genetically inferior, though we continue to dominate the atheletic world, flourish in spite of generally limited resources, and rarely, if ever contract many diseases that most Caucasian races are highly succeptible to. We are thought of as dangerous thieves and drug dealers, when we’ve never been at the helm of AIG, Citibank, Bank of America, and many other corporations that steal whole futures, and we’ve historically lacked the resources necessary to introduce most of the drugs in this country to this economy. I encourage you all to pick up a copy of Micheal Moore’s book “Stupid White Men”. In it, he drew a very interesting parrallel, voicing my own feelings–that when I see white men in other cars pull up along side me, I’m more inclined, as a young Black man, to roll up my windows and lock my doors, than he is or at least I should be more inclined to do so. No, we must continue to fight inequality with dignity and without violence. As hard as it may sound, taking those kids out of that situation is to rob them of an education of what the world environment they are born into is really like. It is crucial for them to understand that while there are many non-racist people in this country, there are some who are dangerously racist, and worse yet, don’t know why. A common excuse is “that’s how I was brought up.” Right now, the sales of various types of ammuntion are rising like the price of gold. Hmmmm….who are the intended targets, and why? This may be the ultimate question–why is white America truly afraid of Blacks, more so than any other ethnicity? Is there some sort of Nietzschean or Darwinian inherent superiority we possess that they feel must be suppressed? Is this why the congressman thought is was acceptable to shout “You Lie” during Barack Obama’s address? Folks, the war is not over, it’s just starting. But, as Martin Luther King said, it’s a moral war we’re waging.

Now let’s start working on the black on black crime, people not going to school, dead beat dads and mothers and why we continue to make excuses for what we do.
