tgtribune11-99This is not the first time an inmate set for execution has been found to be wrongfully convicted. With the advent of DNA technology, among other things, it seems the justice system has been able to correct itself somewhat. Still, the prison industrial complex keeps a disproportionate amount of Black men and women behind bars, unable to contribute to society or build lasting familial structures. Find out how you can reach out to a local prison to volunteer time or donations to keep real criminals behind bars and to help win wrongfully convicted citizens freedom. -NewsOne Staff

From ChicagoTribune.com:

The Cook County Board today agreed to pay $525,000 to a former Death Row inmate already given $5.5 million by the city to settle a wrongful conviction lawsuit.
The money due under the settlement approved by the board will be paid to Leroy Orange in five equal installments, the last of which is due in January 2014. He spent 19 years behind bars until former Gov. George Ryan pardoned him in 2003. Like several other former murder defendants, Orange alleged that former Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge used torture to force his murder confession. Neither the city nor the county admitted wrongdoing in settling the cases.

Give ex-offenders the motivation and real chance to be full productive citizens. Support HR 1529 Second Chance Act for ex-offenders. This is real legislation with teeth, not that dog and pony show signed by Bush in 2007.

@ headraider you know where I can get more info on HR 1529? If so post it.

5.5 mill?? Seriously he needs that much? Waste of money….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

I dont think 5.5 million (it is a great amount though), could even begin to pay for the pieces of his life he has lost with this wrongful conviction.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/typeflow/ typeflow

That is a good deal. 5.5 mil for 19 years. That equals $289,474 per year. I doubt he was going to be more productive than that. lol DUDE WINS

I am upset that this is tax dollars being put out for someones mistake.

In the 80′s DNA testing wasnt available with technology and all, so alot of ppl are being freed when the evidence is tested. The number of years in prison is multipled by the amt that has been set for wrongful convicted inmates to receive for that city/state. Good for him, no amount of money will get back 19 years of your life. It makes the future alot brighter. Just glad justice could right a wrong.

“typeflow PEOPLE LIKE YOU MAKE ME SICK… DO YOU THINK THAT 5.5 MILLIONS… COULD EVER MAKE UP FOR THE LOST OF 19 YEARS OF A PERSON LIFE… IF YOU DO YOU ARE DUMBER THAN I THOUGHT… AND FOR YOU TO SAY THAT YOU DOUBT… THAT HE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE PRODUCTIVE THAN THAT… FIRST OF ALL YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THIS MAN DESTINY ENTAILED… HE COULD HAVE BEEN THE NEXT NOBEL PRIZE WINNER FOR ALL ANY OF US KNOW… THEY TOOK 19 YEARS OF HIS LIFE BEHIND FALSE EVIDENT… THEY COULD HAVE AT LEAST GIVEN HIM A MILLION DOLLARS… FOR EACH YEAR OF HIS LIFE THAT THEY TOOK FROM HIM… AND EVEN THAT WOULDN’T MAKE UP FOR HIS LOST YEARS… YOU SOUND DUMB AS HELL DON’T YOU KNOW THAT THEY USED TAX DOLLARS TO PUT HIM IN PRISON ALSO…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TBWilliams/ TBWilliams

I think the bigger point here is that the prosecutors and the police are criminals “in this case”… and should be put in prison for their intended heinous actions!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/earlwinfrey/ earlwinfrey

Who is going to have to pay this money? You and me, which is BS. They need to make everyone who was involved in locking this man up pay. They are not going to prosecute them so they at least should make them all responsible for the settlement. I am sure they all still have there tax paying jobs.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/upnorthdude09/ upnorthdude09

I am just wondering why he has to have the money stretched out 5 years. He didn’t stretch out his jail time right? He did the whole 19, straight so they need to cut that man a check for the amount he is owed. Of course it is not enough for them taking 19yrs of a persons life, making them have to deal with the fact that they are in jail for something they didn’t do, and now they want to stretch out the payments of his money. They need to give that man his s**t. It has to be the worst feeling and I know it had to fu@k with that mans head to know he did not commit this crime but is in jail, it had to!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Divine_1271/ Divine_1271

The real question is how many other innocent people r sitting on deathrow or just in jail and prison that will not be found ng. I think there are a. Lot more people sitting in there while the prison industrial complex and it’s funders get FAT at the expense of poor people. Just imagine how many we don’t know about!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

typeflow, DAMN! What kind of comment was that to make? We dont who this man was at the time of the wrongful conviction and have no idea what he could have become. What you say your last name was again…Limbaugh?

upnorthdude09, Well well, I agree with you 100 on your post…They should have the man’s check cut when he walked out the gates

On the another note, I feel for the people of that state having to AGAIN foot the bill for the fukk-ups of the ‘legal’ system, cuz it damn sure aint comin out those judges, attorney’s, officers pockets.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Blue_Thunder2/ Blue_Thunder2

There’s some really dumb people commenting on this…typeflow & Youngblk09. Do you think any amount of money would compensate me for the time lost with my family and friend?

As far as I know, we still only go through this life thing once and how many of you would be sad if you missed out on some of the great memories in your life? Couldn’t pay me enough…I would want blood!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jeffrey1975/ Jeffrey1975

With the money awarded, is the gentleman responsible for paying the taxes on it. Is the State of Il going to include financial as well as psych counseling. Just awarding anyone that amount of money and releasing them back into the general public goes to show the people that as a whole, they’re more stupid than they expect. A man has been kept away from regular society and has been brainwashed to be institutionalized. No matter what amount of money and a funky apology, the justice system and government needs to do more.

I don’t understand why any “conscientious” so-called Black American would be shocked or unnerved by any exhibition of White Racism. When you consider how many black inmates have been exonerated by DNA testing, can you imagine how many innocent people have already been killed by the State? Unbeknownst the tax payer, The Criminal Justice System is actually manufacturing criminals. To paraphrase Judge Mathis: “The Criminal Justice System is just a neo-slavery system.” Since you cannot “BEAT THEM”, you better learn how to infiltrate. In closing, I just want to remind you that: “EVERY WHITE FACE IS NOT YOUR ENEMY, AND EVERY BLACK FACE AIN’T YOUR BROTHER.” So sincere, Michael Sydney Perkins (aka sweetp06519@yahoo.com)

Just makes one wonder, how many people have been wrongfully executed, or died while in prison and shouldn’t have been there…

@Earlwinfrey, You and I and everyone else just bailed out crooked, lying, stealing, exploitative, nefarious, evil, devilish, satanic, wall street bankers, after they left millions of people unemployed, underemployed, homeless, hungry etc. Stop whining about a little 5.5million to a dude who did absolutely NOTHING WRONG!

We at least know what you’re willing to sell you’re freedom, separation from family/friends,… to live in a Cage, lost reputation, opportunity, and subjected to being Sodomized by others.

WE also at least know who’s willing to take his place in Prison?

Others that see this for what it is: there’s NO real record of those falsely prosecuted and imprisoned, receiving the JUSTICE of seeing those that Railroaded them for: expediency, political, and personal gain(s) by having THEM prosecuted?

And they WONDER why (some Law abiding) Minorities have issues with Law Enforcement?

And my man TypeF, treating it likes it “Let’s Make a Deal” in a vacuum.
It’s not a Great Deal when YOU DON’T know the Terms, they’re set by someone else entirely, you have no say-so, and BEFORE receiving the “Deal” you could’ve been Anally assaulted on a Daily basis for 19 Years?

Oh, I’m sorry maybe that’s a Good Deal to YOU? Who am I (or anyone else here) to judge your Standards?:):):):)

I’m wondering myself if he is ever gonna be taxed on this money. This is sad though and it makes me wonder how many other people have been put in this sitation. I have a feeling there is gonna be millions and millions of dollars that will be doled out to these people. But I hope he lives life to the fullest now.

I DONT THINK LIFE CAN BE BOUGHT WITH MONEY… MOST OF US ARE PROBABLY JUST A FEW YEARS OVER TWENTY. NOW IMAGINE SPENDING YOUR WHOLE LIETIME BEHIND BARS!! THATS 20 YEARS HE LOST OUT OF HIS LIFE THAT NEEDS TO BE PAID BACK IN BLOOD! A HUNDRED BILLION COULDNT BUY BACK THE TIME YOU LOST & THE LIVES IT DESTROYED & DEVASTED BEHIND!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Splash_Waters253/ Splash_Waters253

Wow!!!! They still wrongfully lock up black people for crimes they didn’t commit? Where they do that at? GTFOH….I’m happy he got “compensated” for the years that were stripped away from him but he will never get those back as well. And not to mention the scrutiny from others who believe he committed the crime. Smdh….And this will continue with no end. Blacks being locked up because some lily white b/itch says “he did it” or the crooked cops using their authority to belittle ‘us’. Tell the truth shame the devil craKKKas!
